5 Signs It Is Time to Replace Your Water Heater

5 Signs It is Time to Replace Your Water Heater

A water heater rarely fails without warning. Catch these signs early and you can replace it on your schedule — not during a cold shower.

Most tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years. As they age, small problems start to add up. Here are the signs that it is time to plan a replacement.

1. It is simply old

If your unit is past the 10-year mark, even a working heater is living on borrowed time. Knowing its age helps you plan ahead instead of reacting to a failure.

2. Rusty or discolored hot water

Brown or metallic-tasting hot water often means rust inside the tank. Once a tank corrodes from the inside, replacement is the only real fix.

3. Rumbling or popping noises

Sediment builds up at the bottom of the tank and hardens over time, making the heater work harder and bang as it runs. That means lost efficiency and added strain.

4. Water around the base

Any pooling or dampness near the tank is a warning sign. A leaking tank will not heal — and a sudden rupture can flood a finished space.

5. Not enough hot water — or rising bills

  • Running out of hot water faster than you used to usually means lost capacity.
  • A climbing gas or electric bill can mean the unit is losing efficiency.

If you are seeing two or more of these, it is worth having a licensed plumber evaluate the unit. In many cases we can replace a water heater the same day — and a modern high-efficiency model often pays for itself in lower bills.
